Buying and Selling Products on PivoHub: Real-World Implications

I wish to sell products available on PivoHub to my customers. There is a simple yet important process to follow that varies by region. In Quebec, the sale of alcohol and food products in stores is regulated by specific laws and organizations. Here’s how it generally works:

I am an individual, can I purchase products on PivoHub?

PivoHub offers a wholesale distribution marketplace. Only large quantities are for sale, and the relationships with suppliers are strictly commercial.

In Canada, it is generally prohibited to purchase alcohol directly from a producer.

Additionally, it is the producer’s responsibility to manage the necessary documents for a commercial relationship with a retail business (such as credit notes, transaction history, alcohol sales permit numbers, and business registration details).

How can I sell alcohol in my store?

Stores can sell wine, beer, and cider, but they must obtain a specific license to do so. To get this license, they need to consult food control institutions.

Products must be sold in dedicated sections and comply with certain restrictions, such as sales hours and age limits for purchase.

Depending on the region, the sale of alcohol is prohibited for individuals under 18 or 21 years old. It is the responsibility of the sales staff to verify the age of consumers and enforce the law.

In Quebec, for example, a store cannot sell exclusively alcohol; at least 50% of the products must be non-alcoholic.

Additionally, consuming alcohol on the premises is generally prohibited unless a specific gathering permit is obtained.

I want to sell food products purchased on PivoHub; are there any specific restrictions?

You can purchase any type of products on PivoHub, whether fresh or not, but it is important to be cautious about sanitary rules. Ensuring compliance with health and safety standards is crucial when dealing with food items to maintain quality and safety for consumers.

  1. Supermarkets and grocery stores:

    1. Stores that sell food products must comply with the health and safety standards set by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food of Quebec (MAPAQ). This includes regulations on the handling, storage, and labeling of food products.

    2. To sell perishable products, it's imperative to maintain the cold chain and adhere to the expiration dates associated with each product. Staff must also be trained in hygiene practices to sell fresh or frozen products.

  2. Local and organic products:

    1. Many stores emphasize local and organic products to meet the growing consumer demand for more sustainable and higher-quality options.

    2. To use the term "Organic Products," you must comply with specific certifications. It is generally prohibited to claim that a product is organic without official certification.

Can I promote my products freely?

PivoHub is a platform exclusively for professionals, and advertising and promoting alcoholic products on the PivoHub marketplace are not subject to the specific advertising rules governing alcohol sales.

  • In-store, it’s crucial to understand that retailers can offer promotions and special deals on food and alcoholic products, but they must ensure these promotions comply with applicable laws.

  • For instance, in Quebec, promotions on alcohol must adhere to the regulations set by the SAQ (Société des alcools du Québec).According to the laws and regulations in effect in Quebec, certain populations cannot be specifically targeted by advertising for alcoholic beverages, primarily children and adolescents. The SAQ and the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (RACJ) impose strict restrictions on alcohol advertising to protect these vulnerable groups.

  • Additionally, certain public health messages must be included in advertisements for alcoholic products. For more information, visit your province’s Ministry of Commerce or Agriculture website.
